Day #7: The Holidays

#7: The Holidays

It’s the middle of summer, so why would I be writing about the holidays, you ask? It’s because I’m watching My Name is Earl from the beginning, and the Christmas episode was just on, so I figured why not. I was raised Catholic from Kindergarten to graduation, so we celebrated Christmas and Easter. I have to say I’m not a huge fan of the holidays. When my parents’ house is filled with people, it drives my anxiety nuts. I know it does the same thing to my dad. Whenever the house gets full, my dad ends up disappearing. I remember one time (with a full house) after getting to my parents’, my dad was mowing the lawn. After about three hours, he still hadn’t returned. I had to run out to my car to go grab something, and my dad had been going down the line and mowing all the neighbors lawns, just to have an excuse. Just because I’m not a fan of the holidays doesn’t mean I don’t participate and at least try to have a good time. My mom is notorious for going a bit overboard on things. Christmas at her house is a mountain of gifts and all the food you can eat, plus a whole chicken. She starts saving up for Christmas gifts about two weeks after Christmas. I’m 23 years old, and she still makes me an Easter basket. I always hate when people give others a hard time for not being a fan of whatever holiday. For many it’s a hard time, especially for those who suffer from depression or mental illnesses. They might not be Uncle Scrooge; they might just be dealing with something, so don’t be so damn judgy. Some TV shows that have great holiday specials are: King of the Hill, and The Flintstones. For some reason, I can’t think of any more. I’ll try Christmas movies: I’ll be Home for Christmas, Bad Santa, Elf, The Grinch (Animated), Fred Claus, and Iron Man 3.

Everyday I will be posting an entry in my writing challenge 100 Days which has been collected into a print collection. If you are interested in purchasing a print collection: http://www.lulu.com/shop/austin-hamblin/100-days/paperback/product-23916414.html
